The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, yesterday challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to face the reality that more Nigerians are dying and getting poorer under his watch.

Reacting to the massacre of hundreds of innocent souls in Barki Ladi local government area of Plateau State at the weekend, and the Brookings Institutions’ report on Nigeria’s latest poverty level, Secondus said that nothing can justify the continued blood flow in the country with the ruling APC who instead of nipping it in the bud has chosen to remain indifferent.

In a statement from his media office signed by Ike Abonyi, Prince Secondus said that “the federal government and its security agencies appear to have switched off on the killings and now concentrating on how to intimidate people and win election at all cost.”

“Otherwise how does one explain the genocides in Plateau that was carried out for over five hours and there was no interruption from any security body in a distance less than 20 kilometers from Jos the state capital, headquarters of an Army and Airforce divisions with Police, Directorate of State Services DSS, Civil Defence and others.”

On his part, PDP presidential aspirant, Senator Ahmed Muhammed Makarfi said he is pained by the breakout of violence and resultant loss of lives and property in Plateau State. Makarfi, in a statement, by his media aide, Mukhtar Zubairu Sirajo, said the calamity is unfortunate, unnecessary and condemnable.

“Senator Makarfi believes that even though disagreements are normal in any human setting, the civilised way of resolving such disagreements is by communicating with one another through constant and continuous constructive engagement. The resort to violence has never been known to have led to the resolution of any dispute.”

The governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Dr Umar Ardo, also decried the killings and knocked the administration for failing to address it.

He said, “in my state in Adamawa, just near my hometown in Demsa LGA, 21 innocent lives were lost in the most gruesome manner. Then in Plateau, 86 lives were reported lost. The gory pictures of mutilated bodies, packed one upon the other like sardine, tell the story of who we actually are. Yet, we kid ourselves that we’re a people in a nation with a government. The truth is that we’re less than humans, living in a stateless society with a government without authority.

“All Fulanis, particularly those of us who went to schools, know that the actions of the so-called Fulani Herdsmen do not represent the position of the Funani people. Whatever their ideology is, it is not at all shared by the rest of the Fulani and adherents of Pulaku, the Fulbe Code of Conduct. The so-called ‘Fulani Herdsmen’ are an insignificant number whose ideology is clearly seen by all to be plainly harmful to the society”.

“But the Buhari regime, like the Jonathan’s own before it, failed to act appropriately to protect citizens from this harm. Members of this dreadful group started conceiving evil, consulting amongst themselves; then it reached the stages of plotting, planning and executing their evil deeds and vanishing into thin air without being apprehended. Yet we know that the only entity with the primary duty to detect, stop and punish evil acts, such as these ones, with all the powers, personnel and resources for that, is the state.  This is the primary duty of the state – for which reason the state exists”.
